Market Vendors Malaria Project I (MAVEMAP I) is a project implemented by Development Initiatives International in partnership with the Rotary Club of Mbale Metropolitan in the markets of Mbale central, Bugwere road and Soroti road in Mbale City.
The project mainly targets market vendors especially women and mothers who account for 70% of vendors working in the three markets in Mbale City.
MAVEMAP 1 is an intervention that contributes towards improving health status of market vendors especially women by empowering them with knowledge about causes, transmission, prevention and treatment of malaria.
The implementation is through a peer to peer approach which is cost effective but also fosters community ownership and, therefore, enhances sustainability and use of a community radio system commonly known as the Vendors Voice.
The activities include;

Held a three days afternoon training for Malaria Prevention & Management best practices for 90 Peer Educators (57F, 33) from Mbale central, Soroti and Bugwere markets in Mbale City.

Sensitize vendors about malaria through Vendors’ Voice radio in Mbale Central market and megaphones are used in the markets without the Vendors Voice.

Sensitize vendors about malaria through trained Peer Educators of Bugwere road, Mbale central and Soroti road markets.

Run malaria jingles on the vendors’ voice in Mbale Central market.

Distribution of Information Educational and Communication materials from DII and the district to Peer Educators and other vendors.

Conduct market based malaria testing days in Mbale central, Soroti road & Bugwere road markets.

Conduct DII market day sensitization on improving the sanitation and disposal of garbage to reduce on the mosquito breeding places.

Distribute mosquito nets to Women and Household members.
